What is Glycolic Acid?

Glycolic acid is the smallest commonly used alpha hydroxy acid, which contributes to efficient penetration through the stratum corneum. In appropriately formulated products it is used for surface exfoliation, texture smoothing and support for uneven pigmentation.

Its relatively strong penetration also means glycolic acid can be more irritating than gentler-feeling exfoliants for some users. Product pH and free-acid concentration are more informative than the percentage number alone when judging strength.
