Ingredient overview

What is Tea Tree?

Tea tree usually refers to Melaleuca alternifolia leaf oil, although some cosmetics also use tea-tree extracts or waters. The essential oil contains terpinen-4-ol and other volatile compounds studied for antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity.

Clinical studies of standardized tea-tree-oil gels suggest modest benefit for acne, but the evidence base is much smaller than for established acne treatments such as topical retinoids or benzoyl peroxide. In ordinary cosmetics, tea tree is best treated as a supportive blemish-care ingredient whose tolerability depends strongly on concentration and formulation.

How to use it

Use tea-tree products according to directions. Leave-on blemish formulas should be introduced gradually if your skin is sensitive or already using strong acne treatments.

Pairing guidance

Routine compatibility

Tea tree can be used alongside niacinamide, salicylic acid and soothing ingredients, but total irritation load matters when multiple acne actives are layered.

Good to know

Tea tree essential oil can cause irritation or allergic contact dermatitis, especially when used undiluted or when oxidized. Do not apply pure essential oil as a substitute for a formulated skincare product.
